Web Development or Web Design? The Difference

Non –technical people use both terms interchangeably, but they’re quite different.  But when as a business you are looking at getting a new website made, knowing the difference between a web designer and a web developer saves valuable time.

Web Designer Vs. Web Developer: In A Nutshell

Your web designer is creating a website’s look and feels, while a web developer handles the applications and functionality of the site.  Designers create styles, graphics, layout, and objects for the user to interact with, excluding programming of the interactive elements.  Using color, space, and other elements of graphic design, web designers create aesthetically appealing websites for users to visit.

Web development is the coding or programming that allows users to use a website and move around within it. It allows users to click and navigate from page to page.  The web developer is the driving force behind how a website works.

Web Design Elements:

Web designers use software such as Adobe Photoshop to produce quality graphic design services.  Designers try to adhere to the following design principals to create their products:

Emphasis: Organize information according to importance, and draft a design in a way that communicates that order. Place the most important in the center or make it the biggest element on the poster. You can put it in the strongest, boldest type. Learn color theory and use strong color combinations to make the band name pop.

Without a plan of what to emphasize, if you start your composition without a clear idea of what you must communicate, your design will not succeed.

2. Balance and alignment:

Every element you place on your page has a weight, which comes from color, size, or texture. Don’t crowd all your heavy elements in one area of your composition. Without balance, your image will become overwhelming for your audience.

Symmetrical designs align equally weighted elements on either side of a centerline. Asymmetrical designs uses opposite sizes, shapes etc  to create uneven imagery that still has equilibrium.

Symmetrical designs may be comfortable but boring while asymmetrical are bolder and bring real visual interest and movement to your composition.

  1.  Contrast: Contrast makes a design pops, making it unforgettable. Contrast creates space and difference between design elements. Background colors should be significantly different from element colors to keep them distinct. Contrast is especially important if you work with type.

Notice that most designs only feature one or two typefaces. Two strong fonts hold more contrast as compared to multiple fonts that may dilute and obscure your design.

4. Repetition

Repetition unifies and strengthens designs. If only one word on a web page is in purple, it may appear to be an error. If multiple things are in purple, it’s a motif and created purposefully.

Anyone initiating a startup knows one of your first essentials is a strong logo featuring on your website, business cards, social media and more. What do you think brand identity creates? A repetitive pattern that becomes recognizable.

5. Proportion:

Proportion is the visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other. It allows you to create a design in sections, and not as a whole.

Grouping related items gives them importance at a smaller size. Proportion can be achieved only if all design elements are well-sized and purposefully placed. Once you master alignment, balance, and contrast, proportion develops organically.

6. Movement:

Movement means controlling the elements in a composition so that the eye moves from one to the next and information flows clearly to your audience. Movement creates the story or the narrative of your work.

When looking at your design if your eye get “stuck” anywhere it may be that an element is too big, too bold, off-center, not a complimentary color. It makes sense to go back and adjust until it becomes harmony.

7. White space:

White space is the empty page around composition elements. Sometimes just giving a composition more visual blank space can upgrade it from unexceptional to exceptional.

White space creates hierarchy and organization. and can communicate an entirely different image or idea from your main design.

How To Use The Principles Of Design

A design doesn’t have to strictly follow any rules to be good. Sometimes web designers create absolutely mind-blowing designs by going against the principles of design in order to create an eye-catching striking work.

What is Responsive Web Design and Why is it Important?

With so many different types of output devices available, a web designer must ensure that web pages render well on different devices and windows or screen sizes. Responsive Web Design –RWD uses HTML and CSS to automatically resize, hide, shrink, or enlarge, a website, so it looks good on all devices. Recently viewer proximity as part of the viewing context has also been added as an extension for RWD.

Providing optimal experiences for users is every website’s goal, responsive web design means your user can read and navigate the site with minimum resizing and scrolling. It improve user experience, hence leading to their positive evaluation of your brand and business.

RWD pre-solves a lot of anticipated problems for your website. It will make your site mobile-friendly, maintains its appearance regardless of screen size, and increases user view and visit times on your site. It also helps improve your rankings in search engines.
